What is the Prognosis for Babies Born Prematurely?

A premature birth can result in a wide range of possible complications and conditions and an equally wide range of outcomes. Each baby is unique, and will have a different set of circumstances surrounding the birth. Sometimes, only time will tell what lasting complications, if any, a baby will have; in other situations, problems are obvious from the very beginning.

Some children catch up to their peers by school age; others have lingering difficulties that are easily overcome, and still others have greater challenges. These babies may have conditions associated with long-term developmental challenges such as cerebral palsy, vision or hearing loss, or intellectual disabilities. The condition itself does not resolve but a lot can be done to insure a high quality of life through early intervention services, adaptive devices and other methods of treatment.
